Daily commentary about China by TIME correspondents.

Bad News Day

A few morsels of news, none good. Despite everything and in particular the horrible pollution during the Olympic Committee's recent visit, Beijing authorities are showing absolutely no sign that they will address the root cause of the problem, too many cars. Seems amazingly muleheaded. More than a potentially polluted Olympics, it means that the problem will actually get worse for years to come, which is scary for residents.

In similarly predictable fashion, Wu Lihong, the tireless campaigner against pollution of Lake Tai about whom we have written often, just had his appeal rejected and will stay in jail. ...Sigh.

And lastly, a dose of truly craven corporate behavior, Yahoo shamed in Congress over its behavior in China. It may make a difference in the future, but I'm not so sure.
