Daily commentary about China by TIME correspondents.

Singapore, oh Singapore

Ok. This isn't strictly speaking about China. It's about Singapore in fact, which is a Chinese city, albeit quite a ways from the motherland (tho a lot closer than it looks on the map if Chinese claims to various tiny islands in the South China Sea are to be believed.) Anyway, the efforts of this extremely uptight government to get hip as it tries to make itself a world player in that holy grail of value added products, services, have been amusing in the past. But as the PR exec and engaging blogger Imagethief says, this most recent example is far, far beyond anything that has come previously, so toe-curlingly embarrassing that even I couldn't bear to sit through the whole thing. For the record, it's a so-called rap video put together by the suits who run the government's Media Development Authority. Enjoy!

Yes, that video was the bud of a lot of jokes among locals at that time. The popular local parody blog The Mr. Brown Show even parodied it

But what amazes me is how someone can actually describe singapore as a Chinese (read CHINA) city!

That's explicitly wrong. Even the population here, myself a 4th generation Singaporean, isn't all Chinese. We've always marketed ourselves as a country with 4 ethnicities- the majority Chinese, the Malays, Indians and Eurasians.. But all Singaporean. We have strict laws in place and a Council for Minority Rights to ensure the interests of the minority races are not stifled upon. I as an Indian Singaporean have always felt assimilated and part of the majority culture here. p.s. we'd call ourselves Singporean, not Chinese or Indian for example.

So before you make a "toe-curlingly embarrassing" incorrect analysis like calling Singapore, a soverign country, part of China (and China never made any claims over us), get your facts right.
