Daily commentary about China by TIME correspondents.

A Notice About Comments

Gentle Readers: this is to advise you that we are altering our commentary system. From now on those wishing to comment will have to register. This is because we have been suffering a concerted spam attacks for weeks that send out hundreds of messages that clog up the comments pages. The new system simply requires you to prove you are a human being and not some unfortunate enslaved computer in Lithuania or wherever (actually, more likely to be in Luoyang or somewhere similar, as i have written earlier: when it comes to slave bots (great word), China leads the world by a long way). Anyway, apologies for the inconvenience and we hope you'll continue telling us what you think in the same inimitable, unvarnished way we have grown accustomed to.
