Petra-Kelly-Prize 2008 - Zhang Sizhi honored by the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung

Outstanding Commitment to Human Rights and the Rule of Law in China Recognised

Chinese defence attorney and human rights advocate, Zhang Sizhi, was honored with the Petra-Kelly-Prize of the Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung during a special ceremony held on December 2, 2008 in Berlin.

Sizhi is known among Chinese lawyers as “the conscience of lawyers” and, since the early 1980s, he has been defending critics of the Chinese government who have been indicted by Chinese authorities. Among his famous clients are the political dissident Wei Jingsheng, who used to spread his call for democracy with political posters, the sociologist Wang Juntao, who gave advice to students involved in the Tiananmen Square incident in 1989, and Bao Tong, the personal secretary of the liberal former communist party chair, Zhao Ziyang.
