Daily commentary about China by TIME correspondents.

Liar, Liar....More on the Fire

Some stunning pictures of the fire here at Cnreview.com Commetary on the site also points to what appears o be orders to th Chinese press to tone down coverge of the fire. On the night of the accident (if that's the right word) local radio went to town with breathless coverage. The nothing the next day. The popular Xinjingbao tabloid had a small picture and article the next day and generally coverage (in Beijing; elsewhere was another story) was muted to say the least. (There's more on the censorrship and a selection of photoshopped pictures of the fire by netizens, some of them fairly droll, at chinasmack.com; and for an explanation of the characters on a number of the pictures, which translate literally as "grass dirt horse" but really mean something completely different and much more entertaining, see here) But now as Austin says CCTV has admitted that its employees ignored police warnings and used extra-strength firecrackers in the building, the story is back in the news. Typical of the schizophrenia that censorship induces n the Chines media where so many bright and highly talented people labor under conditions that are hard for outsiders to comprehend. Speaking of CCTV and propaganda, one of our commenters (CW) left this zinger of a comment about the blaze (reminder: as Austin has noted, the adjacent CCTV Tower, part of the same complex and designed by the renowned Rem Koolhaas is nicknamed "Big Underpants" by Beijingers for its remblance to over-starched boxer shorts): Liar, liar, underpants on fire.

    To Mr Elegant,

Usually if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything. It is like your neighbor is celebrating the first 100 days of his first born child, you come in and say, this children is going to die some day. There is nothing wrong theoretically, but you are still an A HO, right?

  • 2

    Mr. Elegant,
As much as the government wants to put a lid on this, the charcoaled remains of the building still stands as a reminder. This leaves one wondering what shall be done next . . . shall the building be toppeled as quickly as possible or shall they try to salvage it, or maybe they'll put a very large tarp over it with it painted to appear as if the building was never on fire.

  • 3

Mr. Elegant probably forgot that nobody should say anything bad about China. And, of course, nothing bad ever happens in China. Everything is just good, if not excellent. And that's what Chinese wants to read.

No more bad news about China, OK ?

We must put this "fire" thing in the right perspective for the Chinese audience, so that their easily hurt feeling would be pained. We should call it the most glorious firework display ever, and should be made a cultural heritage. How the Chinese government controlled the messaging about this glorious event must be congratulated and named the best information provision program ever. We must also focus on how great the Chinese government has handle the event, and blame any inconvenience on the US.

    Brilliant John!

While on the topic of positive views of Chinese news, there is another positive look at this glorious Firework Display.

We all know that one of the most important measure the Chinese government uses to deal with the financial mess caused solely by the US government is to increase internal consumption. This is the best demonstration how this could be done, with a huge leverage effect. This is a very creative way to use a 10RMB firecracker to create opportunity to spend zillions of RMB. The lost of live is, of course, very regrettable. And, therefore, the victim should be honored with a Revolutionary Hero medal for contribution to the economic revival of China.

Another way to see the incident in Beijing:

Didn't Wen said: 多难兴邦 ? What better way to build a strong China ?

Send goods to the dead by burning is a great invention and tradition of Chinese. I just wonder who is going to receive such a big and luxurious building as the Spring Festival gift. Mao ? Jiang Qing ? Lin Biao ? Zhou ? Victims of the earth quake ?

    Great news from China, again.

This is the most ridiculous of all comments I have ever read about this glorious event:

It's really interesting to see someone on the earth (no matter where he is) who is really enjoy this issue that much. So I can only conclude that special Spring Festival Gift was for him. Dear Mr.9876, enjoy and you deserve it.

To a large extent, many human beings are great pretenders, and cunning perjurers at that. But perhaps the greatest fabricators come from the mass media. Somehow, most journalists often self-assume that they are the seekers of truth. Unfortunately, some turn out to be poor equivocators.

The few sarcastic comments from the readers can be disgusting, showing the slightest respect for others. The Whites and their sympathizers should realize that the current global economic turmoil was largely their undoing, relentlessly inflating financial figures out of proportion and incessantly creating false images of the economic health. Who, then, are worse liars?

LIAR, LIAR, your name is MAN. The worst liar is one who intends to harm others but end up harming himself eventually.
    (Tan Boon Tee)

  • 11

Tanboontee's comment led me to consider the possibility that the fire was actually caused by the global economic turmoil that was caused by the evil US. Since the fire is a great stimulator for Chinese internal consumption, it is at least a good solution to the turmoil. I won't put it past China to come up with such a brilliant solution, and therefore, the economic turmoil is a good candidate of a cause of the fire. And therefore the US is guilty, again.

---Hahahaha! Fantastic! You are awesome, John! Excuse me, maybe I should rewrite your first sentence to make it easier to understand for non-Chinese:

Burning paper-copied commodities as sacrifices for the dead is a great invention and tradition of Chinese.

Is it right? Maybe I am "playing axe in front of the door of LuBan(班门弄斧)". LOL!

"Burning paper-copied commodities as sacrifices for the dead is a great invention and tradition of Chinese."

    Problems with this statement are:
    1. The burning is not a "sacrifice". It is for use by the recipient. Burning is "sending".

    2. "paper-copied" is only used by cheap people. Sincere ones use the real thing. Some times the real stuff are sent at burial. That's why dead emperors got real wives, girls and servants buried with them. Subsequent ones are sent by burning. And the AVCC building is a good example of burning the real thing. This proves that the Chinese government is sincere about the welfare of the departed ones.

Funny, funny, funny! John, you are talented. We don't know how surprised "Mao, Jiang Qing, Lin Biao, Zhou" will be when they receive such a "big penis", haha!!

  • 21

conscienceinchina: You mean they should have sent the under pant instead ? Mao, Jiang Qing, Lin Biao and Zhou should all know what to do with under pants. Or do they ? I know they won't want the bird nest or the water bubble.
