Ai Weiwei and the Earthquake
The Sichuan earthquake struck one year ago today. Here's Simon's story on artist Ai Weiwei and his project to document every child killed in the disaster.

It sounds like a good idea. However, how do you handle thousands of Ai want-to-be? How do you know that his organization would never be corrupted by power? It is amazing that more and more people in China, even the most liberal-minded people, came to realize the so-called western democracy does not deliver what it promises

I just have no idea why all these nonsense about the Earthquake. I didn't feel it. I didn't see any corpse, just like most people didn't see any dead bodies on the square 20 years ago. So it didn't happen. Period. Since it didn't happen, nobody died there. And there were no problem with any buildings, much less schools. So, cool it man. Don't get all upset about things that didn't happen. And the government official has already said they didn't find anything wrong. These guys ain't blind, like most Chinese government officials. If there was any problem, they would have known, since they would have created them themselves. And they would tell the whole world all about it, just because that's the kind of guys they are. But since they said they couldn't find it, trust them. Who else would you trust ? An artist who didn't build those buildings ? Crazy.
As for those parents, why weren't they with the children in time of danger ? Don't they have some responsibility too, if their children died ? Don't blame the government. It is their fault to leave children in schools by themselves. Just like the student leaders, they left. It is all their fault now. But since none of their children died in earthquake that most people on earth didn't feel, there must be some other cause of death, like being too happy, or playing hide and seek, had a nightmare, someone did some pushup, got eaten by a south china tiger, or fall of the bed, or suicided, etc. They certainly should not blame any government officials. Don't the parents know who they are ? 你们算个屁
天变不足畏 !! Chinese government officials should just continue to do what they always do. No change is required. The River Crab is the ultimate goal and must be upheld at all costs. And a few lives is a good price.

Wen Jiabao(温家宝), the superstar who can only show his tears in front of people and cameras and recite his doggerels, ever said “多难兴邦(More disasters, more thriving)” after 5.12 earthquake. I want to ask him a simple question: Does he think the disasters for Chinese people were not enough? Why has China still never been boomed?
What have we got from this unprecedented disaster? More responsible and diligent government? More clean-fingered and hard-working officials? More efficient and transparent political and social system? No! Non! Nothing! except the regular boasting and cheating!
A nation without introspection is nohow to progress!
