Ma Ying-jeou's First Year
Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou is keeping his promise to aid his island's stricken economy through stronger mainland links. But cozying up to Beijing carries political risks. Here's my colleague Michael Schuman's latest story on Ma, out in the latest issue of TIME Asia.
-

The tune of Mr. Schuman's article is not right. Ma Ying-joeou and the National Party have indeed done a great job in order to improve the relationship between two sides. But, Ma is not alone. There is a 92's framework established by the older generation for 3-links (small 3-links or large 3-links etc. etc). Mr. Schuman did not mention it as if the 3-links were established by the current Taiwanese government. In reality, the 92's framework (九二共识) was worked out by the both sides as an old Chinese saying “一个巴掌拍不响”.
Besides, the National Party always considers itself as a national party in the first place. The nation here is CHINA regardless which official name it is. Prior to 1972, the Republic of China seated in the same UN as we all know. If the Republic of China were not busted from the UN, it would have tried to block the People's Republic of China in all diplomatic fronts. It is “same'oh'same,oh”.
I think when the National Party finally shrives again in the Mainland, it may be the day that the real democracy flourishes in the Great China Area.

Uh...92 Consensus that said there was only one China..proving that there is one China and One Taiwan? Since the ROC is only the Administrator of the Country of Taiwan. Why? Well, as we all know(and I'm sure I don't have to explain) Taiwan has de facto independence. However, the Republic of China is something called an exiled government, so it cannot take the sovereignty of Taiwan. However, since the ROC was "Taiwanized" in 1960 by Chiang Ching Kuo, and democracy was established on Taiwan in 19-something, the ROC is legal as an administrator, therefore, it cannot take the name of Taiwan.

taiwanrox8: Consensus that said there was only one China..proving that there is one China and NO Taiwan. Taiwan is only one province or, one island of China. And... ROC is not "Taiwanized" because Taiwan is not even a country, nor is it a nation. "Taiwanize" is not even a word.
-
4
Well, all the consensus stated was "One China," however, you can interpret it as "One China, One Taiwan"...besides, China didn't even ratify the consensus. Taiwan is definitely a country. In 1952, the San Francisco Peace treaty was signed which ceded Taiwan to the USMG, which left in 1970, so therefore Taiwan's sovereignty was determined on De facto independence, which Taiwan has achieved. The PRC does not govern Taiwan, and never has (fact). PRC citizens need visas to enter Taiwan (fact). Taiwan is only claimed by the PRC, however, the PRC has no jurisdiction over Taiwan.

Get a life. Nobody what Taiwan is called and its status except DPP in Taiwan. Spending more time building the economy is more important than wasting time on hair splitting. There are not many people in the world who can correctly locate Taiwan on a map. More people care about North Korea than Taiwan.
-
6
It is more appropriate for you guys to call your goverment "Republic of TaiWHAT"?
-
7
sing: Well, if only 37 % of Americans can identify Iraq on a world map, I doubt that a lot would be able to Identify North Korea.
Well, if you look back on this conversation, morriscui said "Taiwan is not even a country, nor is it a nation.", and sovereignty does matter, and Taiwan isn't a part of China -

In the eight years before Ma took power, the only news came out of Taiwan was complains about China bullying them. The next biggest news from Taiwan was brawls in the parliment. Hong Kong is not a nation and yet becomes a financial center of Asia. Next time, the world might hold a world whiners convention in Taipei. Chariman of the convention will certainly be India. Another big fight in the parliment will certainly get you guys more attenetion.
Couple of years ago, appeals were made from Washington to Taipei to buy more up-to-date weapons from the US. Right now, Washington would not even bother to answer to the appeal from Ma for defensive weapons. -

Small minds make small people. Small people make small political parties. Small political parties make small politcal policy and beome irrevelant.
-
10
What does this have to do with Taiwan's sovereignty? I think you have directly insulted my home country, and I ask you show some manners in your offensive comments. Calling Taiwanese whiners? Let me remind you China whined all day to the US about selling weapons to Taiwan. I'm pretty sure (considering Taiwan's size) that among the small countries, Taiwan is top on importance, especially as the worlds 25th largest economy and boasting the tallest building in the world. The USA won't supply weapons to Taiwan now because of warming cross strait relations. Taiwan and China aren't fighting that much anymore, so the USA is focusing on places like the middle east and Pakistan. And also, Obama and Mccain endorsed the 6.46 Billion missiles sale.

I agree, Small political parties are by small people. However, in China, there is only one political party, and that is the CCP.

Ha. Ha. Ha. I just hit a raw nerve. "Sovereignty" "nation" and "democracy" are just empty words. You have your own elected government, your own foreign and domestic policy and your own army. Does that say it all? Why do you care what other people/country say? Look at the result of your so-called democracy. It produces big brawls in parliament and on the street over trivial events, and rampage corruption and vote buying. The government in Beijing uses Taiwan as an example why western democracy is not as good as it sounds. Aren't you guy ashamed of that? Globalization has changed the landscape of politics and China without flexing any muscle has become a large part of global economy in 30 years. DPP is still talking about insulating themselves from China. That is the small-mindedness I was talking about. Keep it up and you will bring Taiwan into oblivion.

Not all ROC people are small, but most BenShengRen are small. Waishengren are Benshengized (本省化)so also getting small:shortsighted, selfish, shameless, and Chenshuibian is the best model! Look at Chen, then you know why those people have no future! Of course even a broken clock is right twice a day, there are still honorous people like 施明德 and 林义雄,but i seriously wonder they are Japanese...
-
14
You guys in Taiwan should take a page from Hong Kong and Singapore. They are both island city state. Their economy and political system do not based on floor show on the street. I am just wondering out loud what is blue-print that DPP has for Taiwan 10-30 years from now besides trying to insult themselves from China. It is sad when you think of it. Small minds make small people.
-
15
sing666: Well, South Korea, Ukraine, Russia, and other countries have all had brawl fights, and I'm pretty sure China would have brawl fights if they had a parliament. The DPP (I am not a greenie) is not insulating themselves from China, but rather, eager to assert sovereignty to China.
-
16
Chen is in Jail...I think its about time China stopped complaining about him... Meanwhile, in China, 86 billion US dollars are being sucked up by corrupt officials every year, and these officials have less than a 3% chance of being caught
-
17
Sing666: What??? Singapore?? Don't be kidding me, Taiwan has a much larger economy. As for Hong Kong, let me remind you that it was the British which built up Hong Kong's economy before it was returned to China.
"Ha. Ha. Ha. I just hit a raw nerve."--Obviously I am not dealing with an affable Chinese person... -
18
A small-minded person always thinks small. If I were Ma, I would issue a challenge to Beijing to have an open and fair election across Greater China including Taiwan and Hong Kong provided that Taiwan is allowed to have full participation. That will put Beijing on a defensive mode. Don't rule out the possibility of a political party from Taiwan, sitting in Beijing as a governing party. If DL can dream of an independent Tibet ruling over 25% of land mass of China, you guys should be able to dream like that. Be a big man and have grand vision. First of all, you guys should clean up your act and demonstrate that a clean and civil society can come out of a messy democratic system. Think big and don't let yourself hung onto empty words like "nation" and "sovereignty

I am sorry taiwanrox8. But what does demoncracy bring to this island. The fastest development of Taiwan's economy is during the Jiangjinguo's rule, when Taiwan become the top of "Four asian dragons". Ever since 1992 taiwan became demoncracy, Lidenghui start using "green and blue" and "Love Taiwan, Hate China" to manipulate election, economic growth stopped and corruption started. The politics became more and more dark. More important, demoncracy create a whole generation like taiwanrox8, who believe Taiwan is their motherland. Sorry wake up, the politicians only care about vote and money, and the so called "unsettlement of Taiwan's sovereignty" is already denied in Treaty of Taipei, April 28, 1952.(see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Taipei). You do have a motherland and her name is CHINA. Please love your motherland.
-
20
I'd say that taiwanrox does love his motherland, morriscui. But that's Taiwan, not China.
-
21
justrecently: that is true and so he is wrong. he is frauded. It is true that China now face many problems for example corruption, but I don't think demoncracy can help at this moment. For example India, a demoncracy country with more serious corruption and 90% poor people. I think demoncracy is the final stage of China's policy, but adopting it too quickly will also bring more troubles such as chaos. Actually I didn't even see any success case of demoncracy countries after the second world war: India, ROC, Korea, East Europe, Latin America...
-
22
I think we are talking at cross-purposes, morriscui. taiwanrox's motherland is Taiwan. As for the question if democracy in Taiwan, India, Eastern Europe or Latin America are success cases or not, you can only find out by asking the ppl themselves. I haven't heard any of them say that they want to replace their respective democratic systems by a dictatorship.
-
23
sing666: yah right, attempt to reintroduce the KMT to China and get blown up??? Remember the last time China tried to have democracy?
-
24
morriscui: The Treaty of Taipei and Cairo declaration don't count. The San Francisco Peace Treaty does count. The SFPT ended WWII. Have you ever thought that maybe, just maybe, there is such a difference between blues and greens in Taiwan because of China??? Anyway, from 1952-2001, Taiwan's GDP averaged 8.13%, so I don't really see a difference until 2008 and 2009 in which Taiwan's export driven market was badly damaged by the global economic slump, but, as world markets gain, the capitalists will be rich and fat again and so they'll wanna buy Taiwan's tech.

Democracy is the most widely accepted form of government. only 42 countries aren't democratic, and almost all countries declare themselves to be democratic. Yes, that includes China, the "People's Country." Never doubt democracy. Democracy is the satisfaction of the people. Democracy is a government for the people. Without democracy, there is no satisfaction, without satisfaction there is no peace, without peace, there is no advancement.
