Here's Simon's piece on how China has beefed up security--both online and on the ground--ahead of today's big Tiananmen anniversary.

This essay by Anka Lee examines Hong Kong as the only place in China where people can openly remember Tiananmen.

Who's Anka Lee? I thought she's an intern?

Today is June 4, 2009. Did Hong Kong hear what the US State Secretary has to say?

It was reported that Clinton just told China to examine openly the darker events of its past. We would like to remind America to examine more openly the darkest events of its presence in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Why does the West never allow or get tired in letting China to put its past to rest? Why should the US keep stirring the hornet's nest in China when it is craving for the latter's financial collaboration?

In short, what right has the US over China, its main creditor? It should have been the other way round.

Good to hear that TIME Asia is adding to its staff. Keep up the good work!

(And not trying to advance any conspiracy theories, but the HK Alliance website has been down for some time now; I can hardly get hold of any information on the Tiananmen rally tonight.)

I wish people realize what status of liberty really means. In the shadow of status of liberty millions of slaves were auctioned off like cattles. The constitution which says "ALL MAN ARE CREATED EQUAL", did not stop man enslaving fellow human being and natives being slaughtered in the thousands in the name of liberty and democracy. Go figure.

I think the Chinese government is now confident that the details of the massacre will never be told.

I know TAM is a place of shame that the Chinese government really don't want people to see it. But this is silly: http://tinyurl.com/qzdz3u

The part from Mrs. Fallows is most interesting. China will have the biggest entertainment industry in the world, measured with the number of artists involved.

I think I said this last year in China Blog. I'd like to say it again that keeping the stats quo is the best for both Mainland and Hong Kong in my personal opinion. Hong Kong should always be the center for massive political vigils such as this one on each June 4. This is good for both Hong Kong's economy and image.

Activist -- in Chinese, it is called Ji Ji Fen Zi.

    To Johnsmith9876

"I think the Chinese government is now confident that the details of the massacre will never be told."

this is your think. but it is not true, do you know you mind is your enemy. your think may total wrong. by facts, it's not by what your think.

your think all make trouble only. it's all rubbish

  • 12

"keeping the stats quo is the best for both Mainland and Hong Kong in my personal opinion."

    1. You opinion just don't count. You are not Sir Donald who represents all Hong Kong people, or at least, "common Hong Kong people". If you don't believe that, just ask Sir Donald.

    2. Mainland China must exercise it's sovereignty over Hong Kong, including exercising its control - political, social, cultural, communication, military, everything. Now that Hong Kong has only a few independently minded media, and they will all fade away in just a few more years, Hong Kong's transformation into a true Chinese city will be complete. The Hong Kong government, led by people like Sir Donald, and soon by CY Leuug, will ensure the transformation to be fast and efficient. The only thing you can do is get used to it.

    3. There is nothing wrong with Hong Kong becoming a normal Chinese city. That way, the border between Hong Kong and China will not be needed. There will be similar rules for moving between Hong Kong and China like moving from Beijing to Shanghai. All you need is permission from you district PSB, and a little greasing on the palm. Just imagine: Hong Kong people can move to China freely !! And don't worry about Hong Kong getting to crowded with immigrants from China. There won't be any. It will be Hong Kong people moving to China in droves instead.

    4. Hong Kong's roads and apartments will be less crowded. You can walk leisurely on Nathan Road again, just like the good old days.

""I think the Chinese government is now confident that the details of the massacre will never be told."

this is your think. but it is not true,"

So you think the Chinese government isn't confident that the details of the massacre will never be told ?

    Does that mean:

    1. Chinese government is afraid that the details will be told ?

    2. Chinese government is confident that the details of the massacre will be told ?

    3. Chinese government is worry that the details of the massacre will not be told ?

All these are quite damning to the Chinese government. You must be an CIA agent, trying to stir up trouble in China.

Frankly why should China listen to US and their propagandic, biased media. Who are they??? And who are you John Smith?????

For those saying such ugly lies as "armies were required not to shot people" and that some people might have been killed in the "confusion" "after the people attacked the army firt", here is a (hard) slice of reality with rare pictures:
    http://www.tibet-defacto.com/2009/06/04/il-y-a-20-ans-le-massacre-de-tiananmen/
The text is in french but I can summarize what is happening. The last students are leaving Tiananmen square. The manifestations have ended. When the students arrive in Chang'an avenue at the Liubukou crossroads, they see 3 tanks driving straight at them. And then, teargas. The students are trying to avoid the tanks by climbing the fences. No luck: eleven students are crushed.
Those pictures have been taken by chinese students at that time. The whole event took less than 20 minutes. We are far far away from the "army being attacked" and from the "we had no choice" stories. Those tanks needlessly killed students who were leaving calmly Tiananmen square. So what? Maybe you should ask your government if they have something else than a good bargain on umbrellas as an answer. The other picture are from a propaganda comics published in July 1989. It says how heroic the army has been and that not a single person has died that day. MMmmm... Really? Let's reprint that book, it will be as useful today that it was in 1989 as we are still hearing the same stories today.

@John Smith: It's about HK fast becoming a normal Chinese city. According to this report at China Briefing, a plan to expand Shenzhen to combine with Hong Kong is already underway.

    Written in my heart.

    I've gone
    near the sound
    of an open
    aspect waiting
    for a blackbird,
    and now,
    while the north
    wind appears
    with a delicate
    care, I follow
    the sun....

Why Did June Fourth Movement Fail? 鹿死谁手? 六四运动失败的原因?

By: Jordan C. Fan, 范楚漳, Prophet of Environment.

China has the longest continuous history of all ancient civilizations in this world. Among all Chinese treasures, none was more precious than our history books. Historians have always held the highest status in our society and honor by all people even more so than kings and emperors. We were, in fact, much revered by all those emperors and leaders of China.

As the world foremost Prophet, historian, and theologian who is also clairvoyant, I will attempt to write this very controversial yet sensitive historical event. At the same time, I will also try to convey the messages from those involved, either Supernatural, living or deceased. May their spirits rest in peace!

鹿死谁手? 的答案是 "鹿死神手"!是天意, or intentions of Heaven.

Quite obviously, the "Deer's Death" 64 鹿死 was caused by Environmental changes as they have always been since the beginning of our Universe. Democracy or Capitalism which are the major forces in the destruction of the Environment were the goals of the June Fourth Movement. These political ideologies allow human to uncontrollably consume all our natural resources and freely destroy the Environment unchecked with blessing from such governments as the United States of America. When the Environment and wilderness deteriorate, its wildlife will die or "Deer Death" will occur. In this case, the people so "Dear" to us must also die because of their misinterpretation of "freedom." It is the law of nature which no one can change. Death must be mourned but it doesn't necessary mean the Movement was correct.

六四运动 64 "June Fourth Movement" as its name implied was a "copy cat" or "copy deer" of the much more successful 五四运动 54 "May Fourth Movement." From its appearance, the May Fourth Movement or New Cultural Movement seem to favor the acceptance of Western or foreign ideas especially those in making changes to our traditional Chinese culture, literature, sciences and technology but in reality its purpose was to free China from the control of the foreign powers and their unfair treaties with China at that time. Therefore, the June Fourth Movement has ironically threaten to undo the May Fourth Movement and must be stopped. Millions of soldiers were dead or wounded while defending China and Korea from the American aggression during the Korean War. Who will answer to them if the June Fourth Movement was successful. That June Fourth Movement was against their efforts making their death and suffering in vain.

The idea June Fourth Movement was also derived from the democratic movement in the Soviet Union (CCCP) which seem to have given more freedom to the Soviet people. In fact, history has later proven that such movements in the CCCP have caused the disintegration of the Soviet Union, economic downturn and immense suffering of their people. It might even have resulted in the invasion of Russia by its enemy the United States, World War III, dangerous nuclear confrontation and destruction of all mankind.

The most important lesson to be learned from this historical episode was the same lesson which all our Chinese ancestors had taught us - PATIENCE or the lack of it. 忍耐. Chinese should wait for the outcome of the Soviet Movement then initiate any changes in China.

One of the major byproduct of conversion from communism to democracy is the emergence of the "Russian Mafia." In other words, the control of a nation by the mobs, gangs and organized crime elements which will create great damage to their people, physically and morally. Basically most countries nowadays must always have to choose from being controlled by very strong centralized governments or criminal organized crime gangs to provide true stability and at the same time freedom from foreign control. Democracy could only work in those rare occasions in highly educated, organized and well established small countries with little population.

In the case of the United States of America, democracy has never given stability to its people. The U. S. survives basically on constant expansion westward to destroy the Environment, aggression by starting wars and instability aboard, depletion of world's natural resources to stimulate industry, and lost of freedom & also suffering of people of other nations. Democracy American style is basically an attempt for a small minority group to dictate the whole population. Similar to what is happening today in the Black controlled United States.

I can easily present many dozens more reasons why the June Fourth Movement had failed. That discussion will be the topics of subsequent posts and replies which will follow this original thread. The most important cause of their failure was that they have chosen unwisely the wrong and unlucky date June Fourth for their continuing 天安门 Tiananmen Square demonstration. While May Fourth means 无死, 無死 "No Death" in Chinese, June Fourth means 鹿死 or 禄死 means " Political Suicide"!

A strong centralized government is necessary for China to remain united. Nothing is more important to this planet than an united China.
