Gene Yang's The Eternal Smile
I've been meaning to post this review for some time!
In 2006, Chinese-American cartoonist Gene Luen Yang told us what it's like to grow up as a minority in the United States with such arresting, uncomfortable candor that his American Born Chinese became the first graphic novel named as a finalist for the National Book Award. Roughly based on the author's own experiences, one of its three short stories focuses on Jin Wang, a Chinese-American boy trying to carve out an identity in a mostly Caucasian world. When a new student from Taiwan tries to befriend him, Jin lashes out. “You're in America. Speak English,” he tells him. In the second story, the popular, blonde-haired, blue-eyed Danny is paid a visit by his cousin Chin-Kee—a buck-toothed, slit-eyed caricature of almost every negative Asian stereotype. Humiliated by Chin-Kee's behavior, such as eating fried cat gizzards, Danny switches schools after each of Chin-Kee's annual visits. This head-on confrontation with acceptance and identity has made American Born Chinese required reading in some American school districts and inspired translated editions in more than 10 languages.
So it should come as no surprise that Yang's latest work, co-authored by Korean-American comic artist Derek Kirk Kim, revisits those dark places where feelings of self-doubt linger. Rather than centering on ethnic identity this time, The Eternal Smile's trilogy straddles the line between mundane reality and misguided fantasy. In the first story, a young suitor named Duncan embarks on a dangerous mission in order to win the hand of his beloved princess. Along the way however, the impressionable Duncan loses sight of the said prize, and changes course in order to secure even more elusive rewards. The second story focuses on a greedy frog entrepreneur who must confront his unquenchable thirst for riches when he finds himself the subject of a Truman-Show-like plot. In the third installment, Janet, a mousy, ridiculed office assistant puts her faith—and money—into an email scam purportedly concocted by a desperate Nigerian prince. What confidence she cannot drum up in real life grows stronger in a make-believe world, even when harsh reality causes her fantasy to crumble.
Depicted in three wholly distinct styles, Yang and Kim's striking imagery deftly brings to life this trilogy's poignant narratives. While Eternal Smile lacks the focus and passion that dripped from the pages of American Born Chinese, it nonetheless provides a sharp commentary on life purpose—something that both young and old adults alike would do well to reevaluate from time to time.

In order to be accepted by the western world, the new standard for Chinese American is to condemn anything or everything Chinese, especially CCP. In addition to that, work hard to make sure China will fall apart. I still remember the infamous words by Connie Chung in one of her show: "There are more than 30,000 Chinese spies in America disguised as students and businessmen."
-

In order to be considered a Chinese by CCP, you must condemn everything non-Chinese, especially western, work hard to ensure that the western world will disappear, and to praise every little thing China does or doesn't, is and isn't. Everything the Chinese leaders say and do must be praised, and blame every thing wrong with China on western infiltration and sabotage. All critters trying to be accepted as Chinese must deny any wrong doing by the Chinese people, and parrots every stupid claims by the Chinse government. "Ulterior motives", "China is too complicated for westerners to understand", "Everyone knows how bad the west is", are stand ins when they run out of excuses. "Hurting the feeling of Chinese", "An affront to Chinese" are phrases that must be repeated every five minutes.

"In order to be accepted by the western world, the new standard for Chinese American is to condemn anything or everything Chinese, especially CCP."
This is what the CCP wants you to think. This is not what overseas China nor westerner think. The most interesting part is there are people who actually believe that. We must congratulate this success of the Chinese education system. And this gives insight to what is happening in China.

Chinese feelings are very easily hurt. That is why they always feel condemned.

There is nothing Chinese about the CCP. China is a civilization masquerading as a country. CCP is Marxist-Leninist, a German/Russian hybrid ideology. The CCP had to create a proletariat class by several Great Leap Backwards - most Chinese were farmers who owned means of production and had autonomy over their labour - in order to be part of the Stalin Soviet club. How pathetic.
And identify please which parts of CCP's constitution draw from Confucius's Dialects or Laozi's Daodejing if it's so Chinese? It doesn't even bear reference to Lishi, pre-eminent Chinese legalist in Qin. Yet you can find there the “Western” concept of Social Contract in the guarantees of economic rights, political rights and social rights. If you think CCP is Chinese, you have been deceived by the Soviets.
Assimilation in a country works both ways. WASPs have dominated the last century of history so of course there are still institutional and psychological prejudices. The point is how you work constructively to contribute to the melting pot – not by ruining the credibility of the entire Chinese ethnicity by vile statements like CCP is great and democracy is evil. If you really think that, you belong in China or North Korea more than in the U.S. Nor is the converse true. But the West has had no problem in accepting criticism of democratic flaws. -
6
Anybody on this board receiving funding from NED to promote democracy in China, please, raise your right hand. Anybody recieving five cents from CCP, please raise your left hand. One who receives money from both sides, should raise both hands. I would not be surprised that some of you raises both hands and both feet.
The world is getting very funny. -

Chinese massive inferiority complexity is self imposed. I'm sorry you feel inferior. Truly. I'm pretty sure, however, you don't speak for the majority of overseas Chinese.
The CCP government is not Chinese, it is Western and Soviet. And I would like to refer you to history. Roosevelt had no problem guaranteeing a place for China in his Four Policemen of the World concept – a place at the table. MacArthur and others lobbied hard for the 'Asia First' campaign because they "lost" China to evil Communism. The U.S. lost men and money to save, or at least assist China, against the Japanese. That's a load of racism, my friend. When have the great Chinese ever done anything altruistic for the world?I think you and 2morrow are the only guys around here who suffer from this massive inferiority complexity. You are deeply brainwashed by your ethnical pride and nationalism. But guess what: the reason why you feel so victimized in Britain is because you care more about being Chinese in the ethnic sense than British in the cultural sense. There is nothing ‘white' about being British. All you see in your eyes is the racist BNP party, a fascist group hated by the majority of the Brits. If you want to be a Chinese living somewhere where there are only Chinese who act and think like you (though that is very unlikely) then (1) go home, (2) you're the racist. Being Chinese doesn't give you the right to act like fenqing and think there's a global conspiracy against China. There might be a global conspiracy against evil Communism. Most human beings, I believe, would prefer being on the right side of history, rather than sympathizing with these nationalist, racist, and supremacist Chinese, ostracized in their own fantastical Jinyong/martial arts world of ethnic pride and power by might and force.

sing666 you must stop drawing attention to your secret identity.

sing666 you are a pathetic spy. Stop looking up Canada - the CIA shares intel with the Canadians. Go back to your post now.

This is the biggest load of crap I ever heard. The US helped China to fight the japanese because it was in their national interest to do so. How can you honestly say that white American would sacrify their sons to fight a war in China at the time Chinese Americans were burned out of their homes in San Francisco. God. You are just one insane person. No wonder you think all Chinese have a inferiority complex. -

How much money you receive from NED to promote "Great America" crap. -

You are some piece of work. -

That's much better. You still need to be more extreme. You have to call me a hanjian and a traitor for the deception to work. The CCP are not that easily deceived.
You need to back up your disguise with substance too. If you want to be a fenqing andn attack the U.S., you must raise the examples of U.S. evil. WWII just doesn't work because all historical records show Roosevelt had difficulty convincing his people to go to war based on national interest. He had to say - your friends in China and in Europe are oppressed by evil! Stop thinking you have no cause in this fight! Then came Pearl Harbor and voila! So you don't want to go down that route against an American; the CCP will know you are a fake fenqing for underplaying your hand. You don't want to go down the Long Telegram and NSC 68 route either - too much universalism crap and democratic peace which might blow your cover.
You have to say this - you murdered Iraqis, you bombed Bosnia, you didn't stand up, however, for democracies in the Middle East like Iran and Egypt. You messed around with China because they didn't have the nuke and when they did, you messed around with Vietnam. What a hypocrite! Now look, you failed to support democracy in Iran but you're meddling in Honduras. The evil Americans will respond by saying - look, there are pragmatic concerns... which you can then say aha! so support for democracy isn't about principle, it's just hypocrisy and cowboy Americanism!
And by that, you've caught your bait.

sing666 you are overdoing it now. 3 consecutive comments telling how this extremist U.S. conservative-fascist China-bashing Chinese-hating racist overwhelmed you by the strength of his arguments is too indicative of where your loyalties lie. The CCP have smart people too, my friend.

"No wonder you think all Chinese have a inferiority complex."
You also need to stop misquoting me. Comprehension skills are a must to progress in the elite CIA profession.
-

I think I might have just massaged somebody's mental Gräfenberg spot...otherwise, how can you get so high...?
Please forgive my poor "Comprehension skills" in English. I don't know whether you are refering to me or not, when you say:"I think you and 2morrow are the only guys around here who suffer from this massive inferiority complexity. You are deeply brainwashed by your ethnical pride and nationalism. bla, bla, bla..."

bylooker, I'm referring to your comment #4. I think you have argued reasonably. However, what you said is not entirely the same with my personal experience. It is true that people of Chinese heritage who grow up in the West usually experience more discrimination than descendants of European migrants. But it has very little to do with whether China is poor or rich, or whether it is a democratic or a communist country. Where I grew up, people around me knew very little about Asia, let alone China. It is usually ignorance, rather than ideological differences, that motivates a sector of a community to discriminate against its minority groups. However, as more migrants from China are settling in the West and as a result of improved communications and more frequent trade contacts, new generations of Chinese migrants in the West are less likely to be the target of systematic discrimination. So my 13-year-old niece's experience of growing up as an Australian born Chinese is very different from that of her parents.
Only a very small fraction of overseas Chinese will choose to become "whiter" or to abandon their cultural heritage as a way of coping with discrimination. It is because this coping strategy does not work and will backfire. The majority of us will learn to accept our differences, and work from there. That's why we stay close together as a family in the process of integrating into the wider community. This strategy works well for my generation of overseas Chinese. It will change dramatically for my niece and her generation, as Australian is forging stronger links with its Asian neighbours. -
18
"However, what you said is not entirely the same with my personal experience." But that doesn't count. It is not from the "trusted source". Only CCP knows what is the truth and can tell you the truth.
"The CCP have smart people too, my friend." And sing666 is as smart as they get, and that's pretty good for people who can believe what CCP says.
-

"The only way that oversea Chinese will not suffer discrimination is to build a strong and powerful China."
Dutch people are not discriminated against, except in China. Netherland is probably the strongest and most powerful of all countries. Swiss are not discriminated against, except in China. And Switzerland can beat up China at any time, with their pinkies.
No. Being civilized is the way to do that. Behaviors and intelligence of sing666, etc. provide great temptation to discriminate against Chinese.
-

Nor are the Japanese systematically disciminated against. Fenqing evidently don't know Obama was elected President too, even when my favorite fascist party, the Republican Party, was calling him a monkey and a terrorist (but incomparable to Chinese people who are extremely racist - look at what they call their fellow Asians).
Indeed, you can't buy civilization with money and power. The formula is simple: CCP = evil for the West. But CCP = China for these fenqing. So these fenqing will always think the West perceive them as evil and inferior, when in fact they don't realize even normal Chinese people think these fenqing need to be controlled by Jackie Chan and the Great Green Dam.
John, sing666 is actually a CIA spy. You probably mean the other two fenqing who are overseas Chinese and haven't been back to their "home country" for decades. They are selfish cowards who won't give up their high standards of living in the West, pretend they are very patriotic (nationalistic in fact) and make the whole Chinese race stink because of their barbarism. They don't care about philosophical morality, they know no history, they don't read up current affairs, they think they are infallible and they are subconsciously racist. They also have an inferiority complexity based on their lack of individual achievement and seek solace in the 'collective nationalistic pride'. This a fenqing. I believe China blog is the first time they have come into contact with a 'foreigner' even as they live in a foreign country.

[bylooker/2morrow stares at his computer screens, yells Death to the evil China blog people and the hanjian Chinese who have been paid off by the NED - whatever that is - and types: "you idiots are insane." He looks at the chunks of text on history, on logic reasoning, on current affairs, and, failing to understand the satire and hyperbole, thinks because they are written by infidels he can't be bothered to read it. He goes back to reading his Jinyong novels and fantasizes that he is the greatest wugong master in the world and will soon teach these people a lesson when China rules the world again, just like in Jinyong. What he doesn't know is Jinyong is studying in Cambridge, quit the HK Basic Law Drafting Committee after the Tiananmen Massacre and hates the Communist Party.]

Maybe you will be disappointed. Conscience is still at here. Seems I never met you before and have no any bout with you, but you are still aiming at me and fouling me after my months' absence. So you may not be a new comer but perhaps wearing a new waistcoat.
I roughly catched a glimpse of your comments. Despite your inurbane words, I still appreciate and cherish your courage and candor to blame the CCP and the evils happening in
China. Keep working!------------------------------------------------------------

"If you do not even understand the basic principles of human rights, how do you have cheek promoting human rights in China???"
Don't put words in my mouth. I only promote human rights in other nations, not China. Chinese don't want rights and freedom and I respect their choice, and therefore they should not have any. If Chinese are not prepare to fight for human rights and freedom, don't expect anyone else to promote it for you. People need to be able to handle freedoms and rights. Like Jackie Chan said, freedom for Chinese means trouble. Chinese will make a mess if they are free to do what they want, and therefore should not have freedoms and rights. And without freedoms and rights, democracy is impossible for Chinese too.
So, don't flatter yourself. You will not, never, have human rights or freedom. And no one will ever promote that for you.

"Fenqing are human and can be converted." No way. Yes, they can be converted, to dog food, but no way this is true.

"the act of discriminating itself is uncivilized, which happens in the West and is the topic of this blog piece; even if China is a barbarian society, any discrimination against ethic Chinese because of that would be unacceptable."
Ah, since Chinese discriminates, this gives great justification to all Americans to discriminate against Chinese, just like Bush invaded Iraq justifies Chinese armies killing its own people by the thousands, and the Chinese government starving tens of millions of its own people. And since Chinese don't want human rights and freedom, the human rights for not being discriminated at is all gone. Since you gave up you freedom of speech, you can't say anything against that too.
