Oh, I forgot. bylooker is probably implying that Yao Ming is a two faced rascal, saying one thing to Americans and the opposite to Chinese. A very common unique Chinese characteristics.

"Yao Ming is respected by Americans because he is a good basketball player, because he plays in a civilized manner and because he doesn't need to denounce the West to show his patriotism." I guess this is the part bylooker is objecting. He probably think that Yao respected by Americans because he is NOT a good basketball player, and he doesn't play in a civilized manner, and because he need to denounce the West to show his patriotism.

It is telling that Yao Ming has never complained about racism. That is because Yao Ming has assimiliated fairly well into the U.S. and made American friends. Yao Ming is respected by Americans because he is a good basketball player, because he plays in a civilized manner and because he doesn't need to denounce the West to show his patriotism. Yao Ming should be a role model for fenqing. The triumph of individualist achievement over collective delusions of ethnic pride.
