Daily commentary about China by TIME correspondents.

Eclipses and Superstition

Here's a bit of trenchant analysis from today's Global Times on this morning's eclipse (all over now in case you were planning to catch it):

In ancient China, people thought a heavenly dog swallowed the sun or moon when an eclipse occurred. They believed the event bode misfortune.

Although many people today, especially youngsters, don't take such superstitions seriously, rumors still circulated recently that the coming solar eclipse might trigger an earthquake as terrible as last year's in Sichuan.

.....or political upheaval? Signs and portents were generally seen as accompanying the end of a dynasty in past centuries (eg the stablishment of the Zhou dynasty way back in 1070 B.C.), though as is so often the case, these were usually recognized in retrospect by historians eager to find them.

Same, the way and the think of Johnsmith & Conscienceinchina exactly like this Famer (河南农民). now you should know the problem is not CCP, the problem is the People like you-农民.

CCP are having more trouble, because there are few of such kind of 农民--like Johnsmith & Conscienceinchina.

    没事找事.

I can see Simon is desperate...he now tries to grasp any possible event to make it an omen of the collapsing of the China's system to make him feel good. Psychic…

Unfortunately for Simon, most Chinese see it as a natural phenomenon, while a lot of Indians showed superstitious believes...What an irony!
Damn the Solar eclipse, why did you choose to pass India, the largest democracy and China, a repressive country?? If you only pass China, it would have been a much better sign that says the Chinese communist's days are numbered...
One bad and evil thing the Chinese government did was having educated its people in order to have a tighter grip…other wise, this solar eclipse would have been seen as a signal of uprising…

    Well said Bylooker!

Mr.Elgent must be quite disappointed that the "darkness" traveled straight through regardless the political nature of human settlement: democracy or dictatorship, so to speak.
