Tearing Down Old Kashgar: Another Blow to the Uighurs
My colleague Ishaan Tharoor writes here about how Beijing has begun bulldozing the old city section of Xinjiang's Kashgar, the ancient center of the Silk Road, in a move that critics worry is aimed at further dismantling local Uighur heritage.

Rebiya Kadeer Visit Sparks Nationalist Fury in China
Leader of the World Uighur Congress, Rebiya Kadeer, rekindled widespread anger in China after visiting North Pole and meeting the Chief of a Eskimo tribe, Popopapa.
Ms. Kadeer landed at a component called the Chandler Wobble this morning, after leaving the Tokyo Narita International Airpot Monday night. She stopped to take a few pictures of herself before walking a few hours to Popopapa's igloo. There she was warmly received by Popopapa and his tribesmen.
After sharing dried cockroaches and panda meat imported from China, they held a press conference in Popopapa's igloo for the sole Chinese journalist, Han Jian, who had followed her all the way from Urumqi. At the end of the press conference, Ms. Jian began to chant "Kadeer is a terrorist!" and "Death to the USA!" till she fainted of exhaustion. A Japanese rescue mission squad was promptly sent in. She has recovered and is now in Tokyo seeking asylum.
Qin Gang, spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, issued a press statement calling Ms. Kadeer 'a wolf covered in a lamb's hide' and 'a human face with a beast heart' for daring to meet with foriegn powers. The Chinese government maintains that Popopapa has received funding from NED, a think tank the Chinese government believes to be a U.S. spy ring, to buy rifles for hunting.
Mr. Gang's statement also said that "North Pole, a populous country with rich resources, has been a major base for U.S. hegemonic expansion since 1945. In recent years, U.S. interference in North Pole has increased in the Western powers' attempt to contain China."
Kadeer's visit to North Pole was preceded by her visit to Japan yesterday.
Hu Ang, a leader of overseas Chinese students in Japan, said his peers were angered by Japan's permission of entry for the Uygur exile, which was believed to be “an interference in the internal affairs of China.” No protesting had been arranged to object though, Hu said, citing security concerns.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry expressed its strong dissatisfaction Monday with the Japanese government's green light for Kadeer's visit, while Cui Tiankai, China's ambassador to Japan, hinted that the visit will harm relations between the two neighbors that has plummeted after years of diplomatic spats over World War II history.
Mr Cui also hinted that the invitation amounted to an act of aggression and China will respond militarily if there are further visits by Ms. Kadeer because "it will hurt the feelings of the Chinese people".
However, there are rumors in China that Ms. Kadeer is actually a mistress of Bo Xilai, a Chinese Politburo member. Posts on Chinese forums say that Mr. Bo is in fact the person behind the violence in Xinjiang earlier this month, plotting to overthrow his Communist superiors. Mr. Bo was earlier removed as Commerce Minister and demoted to run a backward province. Last year, Mr. Bo had picked his nose in a group photo of the Chinese leadership sitting in front of a potrait of Mao Zedong. He was officially reprimanded for his show of disrespect to the "Great Chairman Mao who will live for millions and millions of years".

Running out of things to do, the Chinese Foreign ministry has now created another regular protest target: Rebiya Kadeer, in addition to Dalai Lama. Kadeer and Dalai now just tour the world to create more opportunities for the Chinese Foreign Ministry to appear on Chinese media. Dalai is now an honorary citizen of Warsaw, and that should create a frenzy of articles on Chinese media reporting on the protests by the Chinese Foreign Ministry. Kadeer's visits to Japan, Australia, and other fun places will also create more articles too.

Wow... Dude,
I happened to be here and see you as the most active commentator in this China Blog. As a Chinese, I want to say, thanks for your attention, and your contribution to this blog. You like us, you hate us, just tell us.I would respond to some of your comments here, and some of my responses are not necessarily related to this particular article. They may relate to your comments in other blog articles.
First, I would not argue, if I were you, like standing on a moral land without solutions. We might need more solutions than opinions.
Second, I would not argue that what I experienced/read/heard/saw are facts and yours not, as you often so argued, because all of these are just interpretation of facts, from different perspectives, and I doubt you ever experienced or saw what a real China is like.
It is sad that China contribute to over 80% of world death penalty(but did you notice a longitudinal trend over the past few years that the number of death penalty in China declined sharply), and it is as sad as this one that when innocent people were murdered this July, and you seems, and many others, blame China, Chinese government/Han people for this tragedy. Man, they are innocent people. Whatever ethnic policy labelled as wrong in the western world that Chinese governments are implementing in that region, these innocent people do not deserve to die.
Talking about the history and Han people killing other ethnic people. I think it is stupid to argue that just one side killed the other side. What I know, the universal FACT here, is that China spend thousands of years building a defense system call GREAT WALL. If killing was intentional, building such a great wall would make these killings more difficult. And I do PERSONALLY think the Great Wall was a stupid idea. It never worked out defensively.
Whether Xin Jiang was a part of China or not in the past really has limited relevance to whether it is today.
To prove Xin Jiang was a part of China does not prove China's legitimate occupation today; similarly, to prove it was not a part of China does not prove China's illegitimate occupation today. Occupation is occupation, and it is just a fact. How you interpret the legitimacy is your matter.Lastly, I want to thank you again for your opinions, but more solutions is what people there needed.

China has garnered another trophy as the country that carried out over 89% of all executions in the world in 2008. Congratulations for such great honor as willing, and able, and required to do such great deed for the Chinese people, who, of course, need to be controlled. And China has found the best way to control these people who will make a mess if allowed to do what they want.
-

Dude,
I am personally concerned about the death penalty and justice system issues in China, but I don't feel glorified when you present this "trophy" to China, nor do I feel humiliated when you used that sarcastic tone. When your tone becomes universally critical and sarcastic, you are losing you coolness and your claimed objectivity.

If you read the article, you would not have known that the region was Budhist until it adopted Islam around 1100AD under the influence of the Turkish Empire. It is true that the modern day Uyghurs are decendants of a nomadic Turkic tribe which settled there, but majority of them in Xinjiang today are concerned with equal opportunity and economic progress with rest of the country.
You would also not have known that starting with the Han dynasty, around 100BC, it was ruled by China and held by China throughout many of her dynasties.
The history of Kashgar is very long, so I recommend readers do some searching. Wikipedia is a decent place to do a quick read.
A picture is worth a thousand words. Take a look:
"Uyghur Chinese singer, Arken: "Kashgar""

It is a common practice in the west media to only say what suits their agenda. The earlier part of the xingJiang history will not be boardcasted because of their intent of distable China.
It is funny that in Australia, a plan to construct a islamic school is scrapped at the last minute, because it is "un Anstralia". While in xingjiang, the Ughurs have their onw Ughurs school and language as official language in any road signs, official documents, IDs, even passports etc. Do these facts show up in any Western media? NO...

It is a really sad day in China. China was found to have only carried out only 87.5% of the executions in the world, not 89% as reported. China government vows to make up the difference by being even more diligent in carrying out its duty to control the population size in China.

chinabriefing,
whose mistress is Mr. Dalai lama?
-

"You would also not have known that starting with the Han dynasty, around 100BC, it was ruled by China and held by China throughout many of her dynasties."
I have no doubt all Hans believe that. And it is a belief, not a fact. Han Dynasty sent diplomats to the western Asia tribes, and some were arrested and imprisoned for decades. Han did not rule west Asia at all.
Xingjiang was not under Chinese rule during the early Qing dynasty, and that is the reason for Kong Xi and Qianglung had to send armies out to Xinjiang to colonized it. Xinjiang means "New Territory", and "New" tells you that it was not a Chinese territory before it was conquered.
During this Qing conquest, many tribes in that area were butchered by the Han Chinese. That's why Hans call themself a "peaceful people".

"whose mistress is Mr. Dalai lama?"
Giang Qing, of course.

China's Ambassador to the UK, Fu Ying, (formerly Ambassador to Australia) thinks China needs to do more on the public diplomacy front. In a recent interview with Xinhua she said:
'No country in this world is perfect, and China also has its own problems at the current stage of development, thus through public diplomacy, we should make the outside world not only learn our achievements, but also our active attitude in facing and resolving our problems,' said Fu.
But she is totally mistaken, and have an ulterior motive in trying to convince us otherwise. Everyone knows China's "active attitude in facing and resolving" problems. Just take the riots in Tibet and Xinjiang as example. It is cover up, cover up, name calling, lying, blaming others for the trouble, arrest the innocent and promote the guilty.

You know that Qin rulers and army were mostly not Han but Manchurian. to them, XinJianh isa new territory. It makes perfect sense.
US, Canada, Australia are all "new territory". and how many Indians were butchered??
How many Armanians, Greeks the Turks butchered?? The Turks are barbarinian...Ask any Armanian and Greek...

China's intent and motives may be even more dangerous than China's deeds. Attempts to erase a history and an indigenous culture, under the pretext of fighting a war against terrorism, radicalism, or whatever label, is no longer acceptable by today's standards of human rights. Collateral damage is not meant as a catch-all excuse for sloppy, inconsiderate, or deliberate violent acts that reek of racism.

Ethnic tensions do exist and takes a lot of hard work.
I simply recommend you buy a ticket, go to Xinjiang and take a look for yourself. Ethnic culture in all parts of China are extremely vibrant.
If you find an official Chinese law purposedly discriminating against any minority in China, I'll pay for your ticket.
-
11.2
indigenous culture?
You should first ask yourself what precisely is indigenous culture of the area you are talking about before claiming that one particular so-called indigenous culture is in danger.
only history can tell
only history will tell
and the most recent scientific evidence suggests that in fact we human beings are a aggresive invasive spiece and we are all originated from an East Africa region which is now called Etheopia.
oh, by the way, what will be the next new term for indigenous culture?

I also recommend TIME readers look into the over-all development plan the local Kashgar government has for the city and the reason behind developing some of the "old town" area.
At least hold judgement until after that.
-

Snipers taking our Uyghur activists one by one with a single bullet through their brains hardly fits huaren2000 description of China: "Ethnic culture in all parts of China are extremely vibrant." Ironhand management of dissent is hardly "vibrant ethnic culture." Would you at least agree to this much?
-

"US, Canada, Australia are all "new territory". and how many Indians were butchered?? "
Unlike the Chinese, none of them lied about ruling these land for thousands of years. They have all admitted to killing those Indians, while the Chinese government is still lying about that fact.

Taking advantage of the fact that Chinese don't want to have, don't have and shouldn't have any human rights, two British subjects were successful in exploiting Chinese slaves to make money in the UK, with help from Chinese, of course.
These felonies were jailed for copyright infringement, but not for slavery.

Positive proof that North Korea got missile supplies from China:
http://tinyurl.com/lzr7xcI am quite sure that these North Koreans just found some missile parts in a field in China and just package them and ship them to North Korea. There is no one in China helping them to source, produce, and package these parts. Or at least all Chinese will believe that.

The fact that Xinjiang is finally getting coverage is heartening. Now it comes down to dueling versions of history and visions of the future.
Soon enough Uighurs will probably end up well integrated into Chinese society but that doesn't excuse the painfull and culturally insensitive repression that is forcing them in that direction.
Here are a few pictures from the 6 months I was in Xinjiang, including Kashgar.

China Still Subject to U.S. Imperialism
China and the U.S. ended their first strategic dialogue since U.S. President Obama took over the White House in January. Both sides spoke nice words to each other to create the atmosphere of a cordial atmosphere. Obama did a PR show by quoting from Mencius.
But why is it important to analyze the substantive effects of the dialogue - whether it is in fact the G2 meeting or has created a systematic framework without details.
It is meaningful that the U.S. has continued the policies of the Bush Administration, which has brought much harm to the U.S. and done much good for China. The strategic dialogue is a continuation of those policies and will continue lead to the downfall of the U.S.
However, there are still many divisions within the China-U.S. relationship, which is entirely the fault of the U.S. imperialists. The U.S. has consciously been harming China's interests since the beginning of history; their ancestors invaded China in the Opium War and they interfered in China's affairs in 1941 by fighting the Japanese and helping the Kuomingtang. Then they tried to contain our Great Country after we allied with the Soviets and became great friends with Stalin.
Now the U.S., apart from its imperalism in economic and financial affairs, is now asserting imperalism in environmental matters. Current U.S. policies are totally unacceptable; the U.S. must stop trying to contain China by blocking its overseas acquisitions and restricting its technological imports.
China must have its own day in the glory of imperalism and colonization; Western powers have maliciously tried to put down China's rise and they will not succeed!

Imperalist U.S. Slanders Benevolent Green Dam
Much has been said about Green Dam, the benevolent security system the Chinese government requires to be installed on computers to block inappropriate web content, like the evil cult Falungong as well as any political, social or economic opinion and criticism. There can be no other opinion apart from the opinion of the Party.
The directive caused a huge uproar in China as well as internationally. The U.S. State Department and Commerce Organizations have also expressed their concerns over Green Dam. They have collectively rambled on about freedom etc etc but they are, in fact, motivated by economic profits.
From this event, we can deduce that the U.S. are trying to interfere in the internal affairs of China. They are only trying to harm the Chinese people and hurt their fragile feelings. We must resist the evil U.S. intentions.
Any one with any intelligence will know that Green Dam is benevolent and will do much good for the Chinese people. Chinese people need to be controlled and the Green Dam will effectively control every Chinese internet user, which is 10% of the entire Chinese population.
Green Dam will also help spy on counter-revolutionaries and hanjians who, with the pretense of helping Chinese people assert their human rights, are actually U.S. spies. Green Dam will spy on everyone so that these spies can be eradicated and sent back to the U.S, or laogai if they are Chinese.
No attempt to slander the Party will succeed, nor will any attempt to divide the Party and the Chinese people. A patriotic Chinese must love the Party first, then love Han people, and lastly, love his family. He must not love himself. He belongs to the collective Party. His life is the Party. The Party is him.
May Hu Jintao live a million years, a billion years!

later became chinabriefing oneJohnsmith's mind likes Coconut. too hard.

wow... excellent. This is a prestige of a major power (not to mention a super power) - do whatever it wants within its borders and no others can do a damn thing about it.
Somehow I feel sad about RK (and Johnsmith here) ... you can sense the powerlessness and desperation from them (yes terrorism and online obsession are also manifestations of desperation).
Sad... but like the French said - C'est la vie.

Hi imagebilly,
You are a intelligent person, so all I ask is continue to open your mind.
Let me give an example: all of my Chinese American friends who are borned in the U.S. speak very little or no Chinese. To get ahead in America, I think their parents raised them with the right priority. They must be native English speakers. I know second and third generation Chinese Americans are basically 100% "mainstream" Americans.
Did the U.S. wipe Chinese culture out of these Chinese Americans. Of course. Nothing wrong with wiping out the Italian language in Italian Americans is there?
Are these Chinese Americans proud Americans? Yes! Do African Americans complain about mistreatment and racism? Yes. Are they proud Americans, too? Most are I think.
Minorities in China generally are proud Chinese.
Perhaps you've heard what I said many times. The only other thing I can do is share with you minorities in China being ordinary Chinese:
"Falling in love with 九寨沟 (Kelsang Metok)"
"Tibetan Chinese singer, Kelsang Metok, sings about JiuZhaiGou"

Chinese are immigrants in the US. Chinese are immigrants in Xinjiang/Tibet. U.S. tolerates people practising Chinese culture in the U.S. China does not tolerate minorities practising their own culture in their own land.
As for your 'generally happy' remark - give me the evidence for your majority figure. I give you that a poll in Tibet is impractical. But look at any poll in Taiwan or Hong Kong or Macau and you'll find the hateful attitude of locals towards "mainland culture".

That is what the CCP wants you to believe. In fact, no one actually cares about the Chinese. Anyone who criticizes China is actually just having fun taking the mickey of psychologically unstable fenqing Chinese and their Communist superiors.
Everyone knows that Obama calls Hu Jintao to talk about human rights just so he can hear Hu screech in fear and anger, while Obama enjoys his Kungpao chicken & NBA. Nationalism and xenophobia is so yesterday.
Hu? Wen? What? Why? No one gives a damn. The Chinese Communist sympathizers can live inferiorly and have no rights if they want. They can romanticize about their ancient civilization and live like ancient men if they want. They can chant, "I will love my country more" and "Mao Zedong is always right" if they want in their silly Animal Farm. Just please keep off everyone's back and don't spread the barbarism to decent places.

Here is the irony: we, in the west, go for cheap Chinese goods. Buy the disposable calculators for a buck. Buy ten, when you need one, then dispose of any one that need attentions (new battery or cleaning) thinking we have nine more. Then we realize that the damn cheap calculator was giving erroneous results, screwing us up big time and throw all nine away and get a Texas Intruments. What did just happen here?
"i tel yoo vat. chinamen screw whitemen, chinamen get rich. whitemen cry. whitemen too late. chinamen rich. chinamen screw uyghur now. tomorrow tibet. then taiwan. then asia. then the vorld. chinamen smart. whitemen dum. heh...heh...heh..."

Of course the Chinese government is always at fault.
If the Chinese government did not do anything then they would be neglecting ethnic minorities, leaving minorities in poor unbearable old housing that is falling apart, failing to provide basic sanitation which results in poor health and shorter lifespan of the minority, refusing to bring development in the region on purpose, marginalising the minority by depriving their opportunity of development and causing their economical failure.
If they dare to demolish the old town then they are carrying out a culture genocide.
There is nothing new. Either way the story will be selling very well. Well made money, BIG TIME.$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
